National Archaeological Museum

Collections & Museums in AthensHolding the greatest and priceless treasures of Athens and Greece in general, the National Archaeological Museum is not only the largest museum in Greece but one of the world’s greatest museums. It was first established in 1829 and though it has changed names and exhibition places through almost two hundred years, its essence and outmost importance as a collective beacon of humanity's history and civilization has never changed.

The museum itself has an imposing neo-classical design which was very popular in Europe at the time and is in full accordance with the classical style artifacts that it houses in vast numbers, from every major historical period. Here, among the most ancient signs and marks of men, you can also witness how and why classical Greece is considered the cradle of western culture.

Totally refubrished in 2004, it is updated with all the current renovations and installments for guests and while it holds uniquely to the strength of its permanent collections, it has housed many more and it is also under huge expansion plans, currently pending.

From the Pre-historic age to the post-Byzantine period, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, exhibits its collection that has come from every corner of the country and from every era of the Ancient Greece and gives those who visit a glimpse of the spectacular art and philosophy and the way they evolved through time, and much more. From the Antikythera mechanism to the mask of Agamemnon and from the Kouros and Kore collection to the Theseus Ring, the museum's fame clings to relics, artifacts and artworks that simply cannot be surpassed.

The National Archaeological Museum is located in 44 Patision street, Exarchia, about 25 minutes walking distance from the O&B Athens Boutique Hotel.
